Updated Bathroom Vanities

Read any home improvement magazine and you'll quickly learn that the best return for your dollar on investing in your home is in your bathroom and your kitchen. The bathroom can be the most cluttered place in your house with the least amount of room. It can be filled with pretty much everything under the sun with no room to store it. This article will talk about what to look for in a new bathroom vanity and taking advantage of different options for storing your mostly used bathroom items.

When choosing a new bathroom vanity I always like to try and find a kitchen sink base cabinet. They are a little taller and can be configured with better storage. If you have enough room to put a narrower sink base with one or two drawer bases on each side all the better. If you combine this with an upper cabinet or an in wall medicine chest you'll find you have lots of room for all your needed supplies.

There are many styles and designs of bathroom cabinets but if you're not doing a complete remodel you must keep in mind what the rest of the bathroom looks like so the new cabinets don't seem out of place.

With a little paint and a new vanity it is amazing how it can change the look of your bathroom. Of course if you're just working in a power room sometimes a pedestal sink can help make the room feel larger and there is typically not as much of a need to have storage.

Bathrooms can be a moist environment so the construction material used in building the vanity must be taken into consideration. Steer clear of press board construction as they tend to absorb moisture and swell. These types of cabinets typically are covered with a laminate or even a vinyl sheeting which usually does not hold up well in these damp environments. Look for hard board construction, even in the drawers, as they tend to hold up better in the harsh bathroom environment.

The counter top can be Formica, ceramic tile, natural stone, or other man-made products. I personally stay away from the Formica counter tops for the same reasons stated above. They tend to separate from the wood when damp. Tile and stone are more durable and can add a lot of style in a small space. There are a lot of choices and a lot of places to buy so have fun and go shopping.
